It has been a very busy few months. After conducting public meetings, and attending every township committee meeting, it became apparent that the only way to tackle the problems we face as a community was to institute a new, modern, and efficient form of municipal government. Using the recommendations of the last charter study commission conducted in 1995-1996, and upon consultation with experts in municipal law and government, the C.U.U. decided to circulate a petition to collect signatures in an effort to place a referendum on the ballot changing our form of government.
In an effort to preserve their political jobs, priviledge, and power, Mayor Restivo and the other members of the township committee, have done everything in their power to stop the petition process. They have gone so far as putting a new charter study commission question on next November's ballot in an effort to stop our grassroots movement. Because of their actions, the C.U.U was faced with a December 10, 2007 deadline for filing the 5500 signatures required to place our question on the ballot for a public vote.
The C.U.U was able collect more than 3500 additional signatures despite political mailings, a recorded phone call by the mayor, and a lawsuit by the Union Municipal Democratic Committee. The signatures were submitted on December 10, 2007. The township clerk has five days to validate the petition and then set a date for a special election.
